CBD & Mood: Anti-Anxiety & Anti-Depressant Effects, for Use Alongside Mindfulness & Relaxation Practices

Some of the achiest people in the world are the ones interested in trying meditation, whether they’re athletes, yoga instructors or people who work long and stressful hours. Logically, experts in the practice of meditation have said that CBD is the perfect companion for the practice because it helps people access a calm state of mind with more ease.

CBD works with your endocannabinoid system in an interesting way; the more you consume it, the more receptive your body becomes to it. It might take some people a couple of months of continuous CBD consumption in order to fully experience the benefits of the compound. For others, they may experience effects right away. You may have different experiences with CBD from your peers because each body’s biological makeup & balance within homeostasis is different.

Many users report positive and relaxed moods after consuming CBD, something that can help a lot when it comes to meditation. The neuroprotective properties of CBD also promotes awareness and focus, helping people’s thoughts stay in the moment.

There are so many benefits to be had from Cannabis, internally and externally, as it works on different receptors in the body.

Mindfulness & Self Awareness practices can also be benefitted by CBD use through its activation of the Hippocampus part of the brain as the “[Endocannabinoid System] regulates synchrony of neural ensembles, enabling us to process context of self within our physical environment”(Robbe et al. 2006; Katona and Freund 2008).

This allows for brain rhythms important in orienting oneself in physical space.

As described above, CBD works with the endocannabinoid system to produce some of the effects that people report, but CBD is also binding to other receptors in the brain like the serotonin (5HT)1a receptor. Serotonin deficiency is associated with depression and other psychiatric disorders and it is likely that the effects CBD has on mood and anxiety are related to this interaction

Finally, the antidepressant potential of CBD (possibly due to 5HT1A agonism, similar to some antidepressant medications) has been explored in more clinical studies with impressive results in relieving anxiety and boosting mood.

In contrast to pharmaceutical antidepressants, CBD does not have addictive properties. You can start and stop using it at any time without side effects (WHO Safety information here). In fact, CBD is even being tested to help treat addiction. Keeping in mind that addiction involves maladaptive learning of rewarded behaviors, we see how CBD can help as the Endocannabinoids “act in these areas as a hedonic signal, by which we feel pleasure and learn to repeat behaviors that are rewarding to us” (Devries ands Schoffelmeer 2005; Mahler, Smith, and Berridge 2007, Gerdeman et al. 2003b).
